The process to register a business in PA varies based on several factors. To ensure you complete the basic steps to register your business, you should create a Business Registration Checklist. Beyond the basic business registration steps as determined by the checklist, there is no general business license that all Pennsylvania businesses are required to obtain. Instead, there might be a specific license based on your business activity. Continue reading below for specific requirements associated with your business activity.

A yoga/reiki studio, home health/care agency, medical spa, or other wellness business should consider the following items:

  1. Sales Tax License: Yoga/reiki/wellness services are not subject to sale tax in PA. However, the sale of goods are subject to sales tax in PA. You can learn more about what is, and is not, subject to PA sales tax by referring to the Department of Revenue’s Retailer’s Information Guide. You will need a sales tax license to collect and remit sales tax on your taxable sales. You can obtain a sales tax license by completing an online business tax registration in the Department of Revenue’s myPATH For assistance with registering in myPATH, refer to the Apply for State Business Taxes help guide and/or the Obtaining State Tax Accounts video tutorial. There is no fee to submit your application.
  2. Home Health/Care Agencies: If you plan to open a business where you will be placing nurses/assistants directly in residential homes, you will need a license through the PA Department of Health. You can learn more about the licensing requirement by reviewing the PA Department of Health’s licensing webpage.
  3. Med Spas: A business that performs cosmetic medical procedures is considered a medical practice in PA and, as such, must be owned by a physician or physician group. Additionally, you must be a practicing physician, physician assistance, advanced practice registered nurse, or registered nurse to perform cosmetic medical procedures in PA.

You perform cosmetic medical procedures if you offer hair transplants, cosmetic injections, dermaplaning, dermarolling, dermabrasion, chemical peels, laser hair removal, laser skin resurfacing, laser treatments, intense pulsed light and the use of class II medical devices designed to induce deep skin tissue alteration. After completing any requirements as determined by reviewing the items above, your business should be ready to begin operating.

Besides the items mentioned above, there are no other requirements for a yoga studio, reiki studio, med spa, or other similar wellness business.
